Dedicated Women Create Strong Organizations
Women at the Free Clinic make a significant impact.
Traditionally, women’s philanthropic activity was tied to their husband’s wealth; however, according to a 2009 article by Forbes Magazine, women now control more than half of the private wealth in the U.S. and make 80% of all purchases. And, in addition to controlling wealth and consumer activity, women tend to donate more of their wealth than men do. A Barclay’s Wealth study titled Tomorrow’s Philanthropist, released in July 2009, showed that women in the U.S. give an average of 3.5 percent of their wealth to charity, while men give an average of 1.8 percent.
Women donate resources and volunteer to make a difference in their communities. “The Free Clinic offers the most to the people who need it the most. That’s why I continue to give,” says Ann Bump, long-time Free Clinic supporter. For many women, it’s important that their donations stay local, and with charitable giving down 3.6 percent in 2009, retaining local donors is more important than ever. “I prefer to give to charities that work in a local community...so the Free Clinic is a perfect fit.” says Free Clinic Board Member and Clinic Volunteer Dr. Sally Williams. She elaborates, “The Free Clinic is so important to Clark County as no one else is doing what we are to provide free care to anyone without regard to income, residency status etc.”
“For health care professionals, time is money,” says retired nurse and former Free Clinic board member MaryAnn Thimmes. “The Free Clinic is a wonderful way for professionals to donate their time.” And professionals do donate their time – over 22,500 hours in 2009 to be exact and that number is already being surpassed for 2010. About giving her time, Dr. Susan Davis, Free Clinic supporter, volunteer, and Medical Director says, “I like working with organizations that change lives. I’ve been involved with the [Free] Clinic for nearly 20 years. It...helps many through some of the hardest times.”
Thimmes, Davis, Williams and Bump, along with countless other community-minded women, continue to support the Free Clinic year after year. When asked why, Thimmes says, “Your gift gives over and over at the Free Clinic. Your money makes the biggest impact here.”
