Free Clinic of Southwest Washington Volunteer, Sally Williams, Receives Prestigious Award

Dr. Sally Williams Receives Prestigious Award
1/6/2011
Dr. George Felman, winner of the Howard P. Lewis Teaching Award and Dr. Sally Williams, winner of the Howard P. Lewis Service AwardDr. Sally Williams recently received the Howard P. Lewis Service Award from the Oregon chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP), the largest specialty medical society in the country. In his nomination letter, Awards Chairman of the ACP Dr. James Reuter, wrote "In the area of community service, Dr. Williams is a role model for all physicians. Sally has volunteered monthly for years at the Free Clinic of Southwest Washington, and, currently, sits on their Medical Advisory Committee and the Board of Directors. Since 2007, Dr. Williams has served as the Clark County physician representative to the Steering Committee of Project Access NOW, a four-county initiative in the broad Portland metropolitan area to recruit subspecialty physicians and health systems to donate referral services to help uninsured patients seen at the area's safety net clinics. At the annual Project Access NOW banquet this past April, which I attended, Dr. Williams was one of only three physicians who received the inaugural Outstanding Physician Award for her tireless and successful effort to recruit physicians to volunteer their services.

Dr. Williams' community service extends beyond our borders. Sally has volunteered at an HIV clinic in Zambia and, subsequently, singlehandedly raised over $30,000 to purchase a CD4 machine which brought new treatments to hundreds of people in that area. As I write this letter, Dr. Williams is in Haiti on a volunteer mission to provide care for people still suffering from the devastation from earlier this year and the threat of a cholera epidemic."

Congratulations Dr. Williams!
