9 Year Volunteer
About nine years ago, I made my first visit to the Free Clinic to deliver some medications, no longer needed by my family. I had heard of the Free Clinic prior to my visit, and my preconceived judgments and opinions led the way.
Contrary to some of my narrow thoughts, I found the Clinic staff to be very professional, knowledgeable and pleasant. I immediately began to see the Clinic with new eyes; I saw an environment so willing and capable of giving medical help to many throughout the area that could not help themselves. I saw doctors and nurses that had actually treated me at The Vancouver Clinic and the SW Medical Center. The treatment that was given to these patients was given with the same care and expertise that had been given to me.
I saw these patients then go to the dispensary and pick up their free medications. And yes! I saw me. I saw a medical facility which was about to add another member if it were at all possible. Sure, I argued with myself about my lack of medical credentials; the fact that I was not a doctor, or nurse or lab technician, etc. But, on the other hand, I was not stupid, lazy or lacked interest. After all, I liked and related well with people. I was educated, learned quickly, and had a good attitude. I saw positions that I could fill, even though it may only be filing folders. Perhaps the job might be boring, or seemingly irrelevant, but all of the jobs are very necessary, and one must always remember what made you want to be a part of the Clinic: to serve others in whatever capacity fits your capability.
In 2001, I was selected to be a Free Clinic Volunteer. I have seen us grow and progress in so many areas including the physical facility itself, along with the numbers of medical and dental patients in our care. I have seen beautiful staff members come and go.
I know of promises for growth in the future at the Clinic, and I know of one Volunteer who now probably needs the clinic, far more than the clinic needs the volunteer. But I am committed to the Free Clinic concept, and I am still very happy to be a part of this wonderful organization.
I have omitted my name, as that is not important. I would so much prefer to see yours...as a Free Clinic Volunteer.
